Glossary

Bandwidth

This is a measure of how much data has been downloaded (by people visiting the website). There is a maximum amount allowed for each month (even if a company claims to give you 'unlimmited' bandwidth )

Domain Name

a unique name to identify a web site - eg bbc.co.uk or your-company.co.uk - Available domain names can be purchased but must be periodically renewed - we can purchase, renew and look after a domain name on your behalf.

email forwarding

email forwarding is redirecting an email to another email account. This is usefull if you already use a free email account but want a more professional image. contact@your-company.co.uk could be forwarded to your usual free email account. This will mean that no space is used up out of your webspace quota. Also you can change the target destination any time you wish. You can add, edit and delete your email forwards as you wish.

FTP

Pre Hypertext Processing - a server-side language used to make HTML pages do more complicated functions.
If you are writing your own pages to put on our server, we will give you a username and password to access your webspace and upload your files.
If we are authoring your web pages you will not need to get involved with FTP.

HTML

Hyper text markup language - A simple language used in writing websites.
HTML is adequate for most purposes: displaying text and images, creating links to other web pages and more.

MySQL

MySQL is a database, it is controlled by you in your PHP code.
The smaller packages do not allow the use of MySQL as there would not be enough web space for MySQL to opporate.

PHP

Pre Hypertext Processing - a server-side language used to make HTML pages do more complicated functions.
It is a powerful language needing some eperience. If you do not have experience in PHP then stick to the simpler language HTMP.

Parked Domain

If your website is www.books-forsale.com but you have two or more other domain names you may wish that they all finish up at the one website:
www.books-forsale.com
www.old-books.com
www.antique-books.co.uk
www.old-books.com can be parked on top of www.books-forsale.com
www.antique-books can also be parked on www.books-forsale.com

POP3 email account

POP3 email accounts are normal email accounts, you may decide how much space is allowed for each POP3 account, but remember that space comes out of your webspace quota. You can add, edit or remove your POP3 account as you wish. For each POP3 account you will need to setup an account on your computer.

Server

A server is a computer with server software running. Generally a server provides a service for other computers. Examples of servers are:
A Print Server - allows other computers in an office to access it for the purpose of printing documents.
A Web Server - Holds your web pages and delivers them to the public when requested.
An email Server - Like a web server but for emails.
A Domain Name Server (DNS) - Will route a request to visit a website to the correct web server.

Subdomain

The WWW is not part of a domain name, although most websites are WWW.something.
london.car-dealer.com
paris.car-dealer.com
newyork.car-dealer.com
www2.car-dealer.com
Are all subdomains of the domain name car-dealer.com
Each subdomain will be a different website.

Web Space

Your web pages are stored on a web server and occupy some space, also your emails are stored by the email server, until they are picked up, they also use some space. You are allowed a cirtain amount of space (even by companied that claim to give you 'unlimited' web space).
